The Green Metrics that Matter

May 2011

With dozens of requests for ESG information coming in each year, how do you decide which to participate with and which to ignore? Learn who the key ESG players are, and find out which metrics EHS and sustainability leaders send to their C-suite.

Overview

NAEM’s ‘Green Metrics that Matter’ research is intended to help EHS and sustainability decision-makers understand the business risks and opportunities associated with disclosing ESG information to external firms. In this section, you will find:

Research Background: Learn more about why NAEM launched its ‘Green Metrics that Matter’ research.

ESG Comparison: See who the key ESG research firms are and compare their services in this snapshot of the competitive landscape.

Research Background

The explosion of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings and rankings has generated tremendous public attention and discussion about which metrics are predictive measures of strong EHS and sustainability management.

The increased attention demonstrates the critical importance of environmental, health and safety (EHS) issues in 21st century business management. However, more discussion is needed around how this type of performance is calibrated, and whether a ranking can – or should – be used as a surrogate for material judgments about that company’s long-term financial prospects.

At the same time, there is little information available about the ESG marketplace, the business interests of the various firms, or even about how submitted data is analyzed and by whom. This lack of transparency, along with the volume of data requests, makes it difficult to assess the value of participation.

To address this issue, NAEM has launched our "Green Metrics that Matter" program, an audit of the field of ESG and sustainability performance analytics. Our final report will identify the major players, the proprietary benefits of participating with them. The research also will outline the key performance indicators EHS leaders send to their C-suite as a step toward indentifying a core set of material metrics investors can use to understand a company’s EHS and sustainability commitments.
