Member Spotlight - June 2010
Stephen Evanoff

This month we introduce you to Stephen Evanoff, Vice President, Global EHS, Danaher Corporation, one of the members who helps make our network so unique.

1. Why did you join NAEM?

I joined to build relationships with my peers and to learn about their EHS management practices and challenges. Above all of the corporate-speak reasons for joining, I heard great things about the annual Forum. Carol and her team do a fantastic job, time-after-time. The food is great, the venues are hip, and evening events are fun.

2. What do you like about your job?

The EHS professionals at Danaher are a great group with a can-do spirit. I also have the privilege of interacting with people at all levels of the corporation. This gives me a broad perspective of the company culture and deep understanding of the business issues.

3. What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

I am constantly challenged to stay focused on the "vital few” EHS issues of greatest impact to my corporation. It is easy for us as EHS managers to get involved in a broad variety of issues. In my organization, you’re expected to "move the dial” as we like to stay, and that requires a narrow focus.

4. Has your environmental program received any awards or recognition? If so, what?

Danaher’s Tool Group just won a safety performance award from the North Carolina Department of Labor. Congratulations to Mike Miller (a long-standing NAEM member) and his team!

5. What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?

You need to understand and align yourself with your business and become a well-rounded business manager. If I could redo my graduate studies, I’d get an MS in Management or an MBA, instead of, or in addition to, an MS in an engineering discipline

6. What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?

The mountain ecosystem near my home, where you often see the stark contrast of fragile beauty in a harsh climate. I still remember the first time I saw a columbine wildflower growing out of crack in a rock wall at 10,000 feet.

7. What are the topics you're most looking forward to discussing at NAEM events?

I always like to hear about the most challenging EHS issue people are grappling with at the moment, and Kelvin Roth’s wine, restaurant, and book recommendations.

8. What motivates you at work?

I get a kick out of facilitating collaboration among Danaher’s EHS practitioners and seeing colleagues become friends.

9. What makes you happy? What are you passionate about?

I get great pleasure in seeing our son succeed in college and in his fledgling career, and from spending time with my family, which includes two Great Danes and two cats. I’m passionate about land and wildlife conservation in The West.

10. What are the three words your spouse/colleagues/best friends would use to describe you?

People typically characterize me as focused, serious and driven. Please, don’t ask my wife.
