Member Spotlight - February 2014 - James Hannaford, Environmental Protection and Safety student at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Why did you join NAEM?

I joined NAEM during my junior year of college because of its vast networking opportunities. In addition, I thought the NAEM would be a great opportunity to learn about where industry is heading and how I can apply my schooling to solve those problems

Are you working on any interesting environmental projects for class right now? If so, could you please describe it and tell us what you like about it?

I am currently working on several interesting environmental projects. The most interesting is a project for my Environmental Monitoring I & II courses that is aimed at studying the effects of nutrient loading from cranberry bogs in Southeastern Massachusetts. My testing location is Red Brook located in Wareham, Mass., which is undergoing the removal of a cranberry bog and restoration to its natural state. I started testing Red Brook for Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate, Ammonia, and Biological Oxygen Demand last year, which is the final year of operations for the cranberry bog. I will continue testing until June when I graduate to document how cranberry bogs are causing excess nutrients in local water bodies and eutrophication. I think this project is very fascinating because it is a major problem that many agricultural areas are facing.

Tell us about your summer internship last summer?

Last summer, I completed my internship with Exelon Generation, where I was the environmental intern for their Northeast Region. I worked at the six power plants that are located in the New England area. Some of the projects that I was responsible for during my internship included: conducting a regulatory analysis and feasibility study to develop and operate a marine transfer terminal for oil transfers; developing a regulatory guide for operations at each plant that outlined all their environmental permits and correct actions to take when approaching or in excedence of a permit requirement; and managing the development of two tank truck offloading stations.

What did you like about your internship?

The aspects I liked the most from that internship was the responsibilities that my supervisor entrusted me with as well as how they allowed me to become an integrated member of their team. Finally, I also enjoyed how even though I was considered an environmental professional, I had a vital role within their engineering department.

What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?

I find the ability for nature to adapt and evolve the most impressive because it shows that everything is constantly in a state of improvement. Striving to constantly improve processes and ourselves is something everyone should attempt to do on daily basis.
