This month we introduce you to Steve Meyers, Senior Director of Global Environmental, Health & Safety at Quintiles Transnational Holdings Inc., one of the members who helps make our network so unique.
Why did you join NAEM?
Due to its excellent reputation, I thought that NAEM would provide some good networking and learning opportunities for me when I first joined Quintiles more than five years ago. As a previous career consultant, the perspective of a group of EHS professionals from industry was important to me. I also knew that Sustainability/CSR reporting was becoming an important topic for our stakeholders, so I needed to learn as much about it as possible.
What are currently working on?
Year-end performance reviews, our corporate Sustainability Report, 2014 EHS Business Plan, revisions to global EHS SOPs, to name a few!
What do you like about your job?
Working with colleagues from around the world who have different backgrounds and perspectives.
Has your environmental program received any awards or recognition?
We recently achieved ISO 14001 accreditation for all of our sites in the United Kingdom.
What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
Having to address the cultural and legislative differences throughout the world.
What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?
Focus on mastering your interpersonal communication skills in addition to expanding your technical knowledge. Your career in the field will be greatly limited if your written and verbal communication skills are lacking. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many professionals entering the field today with poor communication skills.
What are the three words your spouse/colleagues/best friends would use to describe you?
What aspect of the natural world impresses you the most? Why?
The diversity of the environment. Not only is the world so diverse, but even local diversity is impressive. I can drive two hrs to see the coast and two hrs in the other direction and be in the mountains.
