This month we introduce you to Jeff Sexten, Manager of Environmental Compliance at Con-way Freight Inc., one of the members who helps make our network so unique.
Why did you join NAEM?
I initially joined NAEM to learn about trends in environmental data from other peers. Since becoming a member I have been able to attend a number of webinars and gain valuable insight to developing benchmarking metrics and tools to track.
What are currently working on?
Currently Con-way Freight is in the process of developing a corporate-wide environmental management system (EMS). Being responsible for the strategic vision for environmental compliance, the EMS development and implementation is my core focus over the next couple of years. Con-way Freight is in the process of implementing the LEAN philosophy for continuous improvement, which will further enhance the EMS.
What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
Blending environmental compliance into operational job functions and changing the environmental culture.
What career accomplishment are you most proud of?
Building an Environmental Department from nothing 15 years ago, to managing a department with a multi-million dollar annual spends as well as responsibility for the company's environmental liability. More recently, our department helped develop and implement a storage tank infrastructure upgrade program that will standardize more than 300 storage tanks with state-of-the-art engineering practices and technology.
What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?
Have an open mind for learning. You will fail, but learning from the failures and not giving up will lead to future success. Don't be afraid to speak up with ideas. New ideas are valuable.
What are the three words your spouse/colleagues/best friends would use to describe you?
Knowledgeable, personable, driven
What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?
As I travel throughout the US, it amazes me to see the different geographical terrains and how quickly it can change.
What do you like to do during your free time?
Living in Michigan the seasons change quickly. So I take advantage of the warm weather while it last, by playing golf. With four kids the best entertainment is to be outside enjoying the fresh air.
