Member Spotlight - January 2015 - Hal Ehrhardt, Senior Manager of Energy, Environment and Common Systems within Corporate Energy, Environment, Safety & Health; Lockheed Martin Corp.

Why did you join NAEM?

Lockheed Martin has been a long time member of NAEM and I became active after attending my first EHS Management Forum in 2008. I enjoyed the format and size of the Forum and soon became the focal point within Lockheed Martin for encouraging NAEM participation. For the past several years I have been Lockheed Martin's representative on the NAEM Board of Regents.

What are you currently working on?

Within NAEM, I am part of the Mergers and Acquisitions discussion group, and last year I was a member of the Forum planning committee. In that role, I facilitated one session and presented at another. My most recent activity within Lockheed Martin has been the inclusion of our common systems group into my department. We are striving to enhance our long-term ESH Information Management System strategy to address our enterprise needs.

What do you like about your job?

I like the variety, as topics vary from traditional environmental, to energy and sustainability to the various systems needed to gather information from across our diverse enterprise. When I get to visit our sites, it is always interesting to see the final products being built and the complex environmental and facilities infrastructure that support that effort.

Has your environmental program received any awards or recognition?

Lockheed Martin has most recently been recognized by CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), which lists Lockheed Martin in the top 10 percent of companies on both its 2014 S&P 500 Climate Disclosure Leadership Index and its S&P 500 Climate Performance Leadership Index. This marks the fourth consecutive year that our exceptional performance has received an “A” rating – the longest period of any company in the aerospace and defense sector. We also received our highest disclosure score yet, 98 out of a possible 100 points. In June, Newsweek released its 2014 list of Greenest Companies and Lockheed Martin is ranked #45 in the United States and #72 in the world, ranking third among firms in the capital goods industry category. Our ranking has climbed as we improve on energy, carbon, water and waste efficiency and improve our sustainability governance structure.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of?

With more than 35 years of ESH experience, there have been many. Among the highlights are: the construction of a new 5000-person manufacturing facility with zero wastewater discharge in Tucson, Ariz.; our Owego, New York site being the first aerospace site to achieve OSHA VPP Star recognition; and implementation of an enterprise-wide Chemical Management Services contract.

What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?

Keep learning, earn the appropriate professional certifications and remain flexible. The only certainty is that your career and our field will continue to change and evolve.

What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?

I am a lover of the water in all the various ways it exists around the world and the variety of life it supports. I love being in, on and under the water.
