Member Spotlight - June 2015 - Jim Cline, Director EHS, Environmental Affairs and Sustainability; Cardinal Health Inc.

Why did you join NAEM?

Throughout my career I have been a lifelong learner and very passionate about making positive change in the organizations I have had the privilege to serve.  NAEM’s core values of knowledge-sharing, continuous improvement, and being a learning organization aligns with my personal career values.

What do you like about your job?

Helping people to grow in their careers and personally, positively impacting the culture in the business I have served and like to think in some way that my efforts over the past 25 plus years have made the earth’s environment a little better.

Has your environmental program received any awards or recognition? If so, what?

I am very proud that Cardinal Health has been a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability North American Index for the past eight years.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of?

Building the EHS program for the company globally. Over the past eight years our team has made substantial progress on real culture change. We have a ways to go but the journey is priceless.

What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?

I’d tell them to be patient with your career progression, obtain a variety of experiences in the EHS field, continuously learn/educate yourself, and connect with a sponsor and a mentor.

What are the three words your spouse/colleagues/best friends would use to describe you?

Passionate, driven, and  tenacious

What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?

WATER: It is everywhere, you can drink it, walk on it (when frozen), it has created some of the most impressive geological structures in the world. It is a powerful force, it is fragile. My summers and winters are spent on it, and its contamination has given me a career.

What do you like to do during your free time?

I like to spend time with my wife of 25 years and my three children and exercise as much as I can. I also have a real passion for cooking and recently have been taking some classes to hone my skills.
