This month we introduce you to Michael Lloyd, Director of EHS & Sustainability at Huber Engineered Woods LLC, one of the members who helps make our network so unique.
Why did you join NAEM?
NAEM enables me to build a network of fellow professionals and I get to check in on a number of fronts such as the Forum, webinars, or workshops on relevant topics to learn something I didn’t know or confirm I am on the right track.
What are currently working on?
Building a culture that drives world class EHS performance, trying to simplify environmental compliance processes, and developing a value-added sustainability strategy. Some specifics are a pre-job planning process, implementing an EHS software tool and self- assessment of management systems.
What do you like about your job?
I enjoy working with people to make things better. With the role in EHS&S I have at Huber Engineered Woods I get to work with many different teams on projects across our business, such as projects and initiatives at operating sites, problem solving, and developing new business processes. Everything we do should add value so keeping things simple and relevant is a big driver for me.
Has your environmental program received any awards or recognition? If so, what?
Although we have not received external recognition I am pleased to be working with teams that have a great compliance record and ethic. It really made it easier for me coming into a new role that the support was in place from having shared values across the leadership team and operating sites to an EHS Management System with enough detail to provide a good platform for environmental compliance.
What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
My challenge is probably familiar to many. Focusing on the few things that really make a difference versus everything that comes across my desk and secondly finding the elusive leading indicators that drive performance.
What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?
My advice would be the same for any field of work. The EHS&S career is a great place to learn about people and technology. To those starting out, I would say build a good foundation through broad experience and knowledge, genuinely respect people not just the ones with cool job titles and don’t underestimate the importance of social skills. Respond to requests quickly with your best work and keep learning. When you have mastered that, relax and maintain a healthy work life balance.
What are the three words your spouse/colleagues/best friends would use to describe you?
I would like the three words to include: Fun, encouraging, and motivated.
What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?
I grew up near the Snowdonia National Park in Wales so seeing the natural form of mountain ranges is one aspect that always impresses me. I go back to Wales every year and the visit includes a hike in the mountains, my bucket is full following that and I feel recharged.
