Member Spotlight - September 2017 - Tomira Eason, Corporate Health & Safety Assurance Manager; Cheniere Energy Inc.

Why did you join NAEM?

I joined NAEM to ADVANCE, INVEST and BUILD- Advance my knowledge of the many aspects in HSE industry, invest my time in an organization that has extraordinary programming focused specifically on HSE and build relationships with other HSE professionals to create mutually beneficial opportunities as peers to leverage our talents to stay abreast of industry changes that affect our careers.

What are you currently working on?

I am building an H&S governance program to provide shareholders confidence that H&S risks are managed to regulatory requirements and Company standards while identifying opportunities for improvement and sharing key lessons learned for LNG E&C projects, terminal, pipeline and midstream facilities.

What do you like about your job?

I like fostering relationships across departments (E&C, Pipeline, Terminal operations, etc.) to promote H&S safety initiatives and implementing safety programs that leverage electronic tools to ensure employees can provide stakeholders the right information to monitor those programs efficiently.

Has your safety program received any awards or recognition? If so, what?

No the program is in the early phase of implementation.

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

One of the most common challenges I've encountered is alignment across departments which is pretty typical for a growing organization.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud being a risk taker in 2006 and joining Cheniere Energy Inc., the 1st US based LNG operating facility, because it is the fastest growing industry that will undoubtedly posture global affects in the Energy Industry for decades. Since 2006 Norway, Russia, Yemen, Peru, Angola and Equatorial Guinea all have started making LNG, while Qatar, Nigeria, Australia, Oman and Indonesia have expanded production. Being a part of the Cheniere team has given me an opportunity to work on 1st LNG project in the lower 48, collaborating with regulators and industry groups to establish guidelines in unchartered regulatory space in the US.

What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?

Be fearless and eager to embrace any project that will offer you an opportunity to increase your bandwidth in the HSE industry. Actively listen and learn from HSE profession that can share wisdom but don't be afraid to innovate new ways to get the job done safely!

What are the three words your spouse/colleagues/best friends would use to describe you?

Confident, Leader and Trendsetter

What aspect to the natural world/ safety impresses you the most? Why?

Health and Safety is a core value or principle across all industries from Energy, Defense, Manufacturing, Transportation, Healthcare, etc. That means, it is vital for the success or failure of companies globally, and as such, it is EVERYONE's responsibility!

What do you like to do during your free time?

VOLUNTEER in my industry, community and church. "To whom much is given much is required" - I serve as Immediate Past President of Women's Energy Network to inspire female professionals to strive to obtain leadership roles in the Oil & Gas Industry. Additionally, I work with WEN chapters across the US to encourage female youth and college students to focus on STEM related degrees to increase our presence in major energy companies by supporting women's initiatives in my community. I also serve as Parliamentarian of Jack and Jill of America, a nonprofit organization that empowers African American families to foster leadership skills in their children through programmatic thrusts each month to ensure they are culturally conscious, socially responsible, politically aware and financially astute. Finally, I am a proud member of New Hope Church, Manvel, TX where I serve in the prayer ministry offering spiritual support to a host of church families in their time of need.

To Make the Most of an EHS & Sustainability Software Investment, Don’t Skimp on the Implementation

March 7, 2018

Software is a powerful tool for accelerating EHS & Sustainability performance, but even the best tool can fail if it’s not implemented well, according to a new NAEM report that was published today. At the heart of the findings in NAEM’s “Ready, Set, Implement: How to Successfully Deploy an EHS & Sustainability Software System” is that success—or failure— often comes down to how well the company mapped the system to its core processes, trained its users and sold the value to the organization.
