Wayne S. Balta has global responsibility for environmental affairs, energy efficiency, chemical management and toxicology, as well as product safety and related hardware compliance functions.
He joined IBM in 1984 as project manager for design and construction in the real estate and construction division. In 1989, he became assistant to the corporate vice president in charge of real estate. He entered the environmental arena in 1990, becoming responsible for IBM’s corporate environmental plans and strategy. In 1992, he became Director of Corporate Environmental Affairs. He became Vice President of Corporate Environmental Affairs & Product Safety in 2001.
Mr. Balta serves on the Board of Directors of the Environmental Law Institute and as Vice Chairman of the Board of the World Environment Center. He is a member and past Chairman of The Conference Board's Chief Environment, Health & Safety Officers Council. In addition, he is a member of the President's Advisory Board for Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University as well as the Dean's Advisory Council for the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon. In addition to Mr. Balta’s many roles in the EHS Community, NAEM has also sought his insight and authority to support the ongoing development of an in-depth leadership curriculum for its members.

Alex F. Pollock is Director of EH&S Expertise at Dow Chemicals. In his role he has responsibility for Industrial Hygiene, Personal Safety, Auditing and EH&S Systems Services.
Mr. Pollock was born in Hamilton, Scotland. He received a Higher National Certificate in Chemistry from Coatbridge Technical College, Scotland, in 1972; an honour BSc in Applied Chemistry from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 1976; and a M. Eng. Degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, in 1980. He is certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene and is a Registered Occupational Hygienist in Canada. He is a chartered chemist in the Province of Ontario.
During his 30 years at Dow he has had roles in Research & Development, Industrial Hygiene, Public Relations, Regulatory Affairs and Environmental Operations. In December 1994, he was named Director of Environment, Health and Safety Services for Michigan Operations. In 1997, he was named Change Management Leader to help lead the EH&S functions re-engineering initiative. In 2000 his responsibilities were extended to include leading the merger of the Dow and Union Carbide EH&S organizations. In 2001, he assumed the role of Global Director of EH&S Operations. He assumed his most recent position in April 2004.
In 2006 Pollock was awarded the Genesis Award which recognizes Dow employees around the world who have demonstrated exceptional people development skills.
Pollock and his wife Elizabeth have two children – Heather and Scott, both married, who live in Maryland and Indiana respectively.
