Board of Directors

Pat Perry

What is your favorite NAEM memory?
One of my favorite NAEM experiences was getting to know and enjoy everyone on the boat trip during the 2006 EHS Management Forum in Savannah.

Stephen Evanoff

1st Vice President

What do you like about your job?
First and foremost, the company culture. I get to work with bright, energetic, thoughtful people who stay focused on the mission of the organization and who are naturally-inclined to work together unselfishly to solve problems. My current role provides me the opportunity to engage in all aspects of business and EHS management. Danaher is a global company, so I get to work with people from around the world.

Debbie Hammond

2nd Vice President

What do you find most rewarding about working in EHS?
The evolution of the profession over the last 20 to 25 years. Sustainability issues have come to the forefront and now seem to be taking a more permanent hold, so that concerns about environmental impacts are integrated into business objectives. When I started out, EHS was strictly a technical and regulatory function that has now has become much broader in its implications and opportunities for career growth.

Frank Macielak

Secretary and Treasurer

How has NAEM helped you grow in your career?
I have found NAEM to be a great community of thought leaders and technical professionals that has helped enrich and broaden my everyday knowledge of EH&S in general and Environmental Sustainability, specifically

Kelvin Roth

Ex-Officio Member - Past President

What do you like about your job?
The challenge – while there are definite themes, each day seems to bring a new variation of that theme. EHS allows you to address both technical challenges as well as people management/leadership challenges. It’s a great blend. Every day is a new adventure (though some adventures are better than others).

John Guttmann

Ex-Officio Member - General Counsel

What is your favorite NAEM memory?
The first time I was able to attend the Forum and meet EHS professionals from a cross-section of industry. There was a lot of knowledge and experience at the meeting.

Carol Singer

Ex-Officio Member - Executive Director

What do you find most rewarding about working in EHS?
That I get to meet with individuals who have strong values and are committed to environmental stewardship, but who also are pragmatic and their work is making a difference.

John Reichling

Ex-Officio Member - Affiliates Council President

How has NAEM helped you grow in your career?
NAEM has given me increased exposure to the challenges that face the private sector EHS professional. There is also continued personal growth through active participation along with new professional and personal contacts in the industry.

Mark Hause

Hidden talents/skills? What’s one thing few people know about you?
I have a wide variety of previous work assignments in Operations, Sales, Product Development, Tech Service, Marketing, Engineering and Corporate Governance that gives me a broad perspective for addressing issues and developing solutions. As a Chemical Engineer, I am also an excellent cook!

Bruce Karas

What do you like about your job?
I feel fortunate that I have been able to work in my chosen field. I enjoy working with my business partners to move our operations toward our sustainability goals. It is extremely satisfying to help operations, public affairs and engineering work together on an initiative and see the benefits for the company, for the community and our employees. I am a certified industrial hygienist by trade and it is always professionally satisfying to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control a hazard and know that people working in a situation are better off. Every day the EHS field presents new challenges and new opportunities to grow professionally and personally which keeps me "on my toes."

Mike Lloyd

What do you like about your job?
I like seeing the changes my team can make to reduce resource use (e.g. reuse recycle, reduce wastewater, reduce emissions etc). We work on current issues, we are challenged, we add value but more importantly our work benefits society too. I guess the cool piece is knowing that a direction has been chosen specifically because of my teams input. And second some of the cool things we so outside our mills.

Mike Miller

How has NAEM helped you grow in your career?
I have been a member of NAEM since I was in college working in a leadership program with Texas Instruments. NAEM has been instrumental in both selecting EHS as my career choice and has provided a platform to see how other EHS professionals are handling new issues. NAEM has provided me a unique opportunity to see what leading EHS professionals have accomplished at their companies and take back ideas and best practices that can be applied at my company.
For EHS professionals that have not experienced an NAEM Forum, it is must attend event. The networking and friendships made carry through your career.

Sandy Nessing

What do you like about your job?
Being cutting-edge and always pushing the envelope to keep it fresh, new and engaging and to keep AEP at the forefront of sustainability and sustainable development. I'm proud of the respect that AEP has earned as a result of the work I've been involved with.

David Newman

Hidden talents/skills? What’s one thing few people know about you?
I have led teenagers on wilderness expeditions and have rock climbed, backcountry skied, ice climbed and camped all over the world--from Mt Washington to Mt Rainier to Mt Kenya to Mt Blanc. I also lived in Africa and spoke Swahili. All of these experiences give me a calm perspective and ability to listen and analyze situations. Finally, I have been an EMT for over 20 years, and a firefighter for 10. So, I can deal with emergencies, and when things are going crazy!

Verne Shortell

Why did you join NAEM?
It was back around 2000, the year you did the Baltimore meeting. A consultant who was working for us mentioned that you were a great group. ‘It’s all these environmental professionals and managers sharing ideas’. I went to the meeting and it was just so wonderful with all these people who were facing the same challenges, willing to talk about the issues and think about how to solve them. I never looked back. I joined and I’ve encouraged my colleagues to join everywhere I’ve worked since then.

To Make the Most of an EHS & Sustainability Software Investment, Don’t Skimp on the Implementation

March 7, 2018

Software is a powerful tool for accelerating EHS & Sustainability performance, but even the best tool can fail if it’s not implemented well, according to a new NAEM report that was published today. At the heart of the findings in NAEM’s “Ready, Set, Implement: How to Successfully Deploy an EHS & Sustainability Software System” is that success—or failure— often comes down to how well the company mapped the system to its core processes, trained its users and sold the value to the organization.
