Member Spotlight - January 2012 - Mark Hansen, Natural Gas Partners Energy Capital Management LLC
January Member Spotlight Mark Hansen

This month we introduce you to Mark Hansen, the Director of Portfolio Environmental and Risk Management for Natural Gas Partners Energy Capital Management LLC, one of the members who helps make our network so unique.

Why did you join NAEM?

I wanted to network with fellow executive environmental management professionals for strategies, best practices and continuing education to provide the best solution for our portfolio companies.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently advising portfolio companies regarding environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, environmental strategies and related insurance products that suit their needs.

What do you like about your job?

Using my experience and education to address enterprise-wide environmental and risk management issues for our portfolio companies. Simply put, helping them navigate the world of environmental and risk management.

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

Responding to the frequently changing environmental regulatory landscape in the states in which our portfolio companies operate. Also, I am developing and preparing for these changes with cost-effective solutions.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of?

Developing and implementing EHS and Risk Management programs from the ground up and several of my previous employees, resulting in large financial dividends. In my current position, I am most proud of the relationships and credibility I have built with portfolio companies in addressing their needs.

What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?

Learn as much as you can and watch (and learn) from successful EHS leaders. Also, learn what not to do from poor leaders.

What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?

The beauty and resilience of God’s creation. I have seen ugly remediation projects result in great successes using environmental strategies coupled with the natural recuperative power of the earth.

What do you like to do during your free time?

Travel domestically with my family.

To Make the Most of an EHS & Sustainability Software Investment, Don’t Skimp on the Implementation

March 7, 2018

Software is a powerful tool for accelerating EHS & Sustainability performance, but even the best tool can fail if it’s not implemented well, according to a new NAEM report that was published today. At the heart of the findings in NAEM’s “Ready, Set, Implement: How to Successfully Deploy an EHS & Sustainability Software System” is that success—or failure— often comes down to how well the company mapped the system to its core processes, trained its users and sold the value to the organization.
