Position Description: NAEM Director of Programs

The National Association for Environmental Management (NAEM) has a great opportunity for a highly motivated leader and content curator to join our team as the Director of Programs. This role leads our Program Team, and is focused on collaborating with industry leaders, our membership base and program colleagues to create meaningful and robust content offerings for our annual conference. This role reports to the Deputy Director.

Key activities:

Conference Content Creation & Execution:
The Director of Programs leads the program development for the association’s annual Fall Forum attended by approximately 700 professionals. Specific key activities include:

  • Research and distill EHS and sustainability issues, programs, best practices and professional challenges into conference agendas that help attendees advance themselves and their programs.
  • Curate, convene and lead the program development committee of corporate EHS and sustainability leaders over a 12-month planning process.
  • Create engaging event sessions and agendas that allow attendees to learn about issues and topics in a logical and comprehensive way.
  • Possess a strong ability to identify and recruit volunteer speakers by persuading them with the value of participation in our conferences.
  • Ensure the highest quality learning content is delivered at all conferences through proactive speaker management and coaching.

Primary Responsibility Areas:

Research, Issue Framing and Trends Tracking: The Director of Programs will possess a strong curiosity and knowledge base about the emerging and best practices in corporate environmental, health & safety and sustainability management programs. The successful candidate will develop and maintain a list of information sources and experts that they will consult on a regular basis to help them stay abreast of the latest developments in our field. This role will actively cultivate a continuous feedback loop with EHS and Sustainability leaders to understand their management challenges and areas of keen interest and be themselves interested in identifying tools, resources and experts that will help advance the programs and careers of EHS&S professionals.  

Storytelling & Narrative Creation: A successful candidate must have the ability to understand a constituent’s key challenges and identify resources or sources that can provide valuable information in addressing these challenges. They will then need to create a conference or session that would showcase these sources in a way that creates a cohesive story or narrative.

Project and Budget Management: Accountable for NAEM’s annual conference as well as 3-4 additional issue specific conferences. This includes ensuring timeline deliverables are met, managing and meeting the event revenue and expense goals, and coordinating between different members of the NAEM staff. It will also require working with volunteer program advisors and executive staff to incorporate their input into program development.

Strategic Planning: Responsible for short and long-term strategic planning related to Association learning programs. This includes helping to develop, implement and track progress against the learning program objectives developed by the NAEM senior staff, the preparation of periodic operational review reports, and responding to periodic requests for information from supervisors and Board members.

Program Team Management: The Director of Programs will provide support, supervision, leadership, coaching and identify professional development opportunities for the Program Team including the Senior Program Manager and Program Assistant.

Required Experience, Skills and Attributes

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree or advanced degree. Preferred areas include but are not limited to sustainability management, environmental policy, nonprofit management, business administration or journalism.
  • Possess fluency in current events and corporate sustainability issues. Possess a strong desire to work on corporate sustainability issues and uphold a literacy for the topic and stakeholders.
  • Have 5+ years of relevant work experience to include researching, developing, implementing and evaluating professional development programs.
  • Have management experience to include direct oversight of one or more staff, conducting performance reviews and experience training new team members.
  • Demonstrate a track-record of cultivating relationships with (and networks of) NGO leaders, corporate managers and policy makers to stay abreast of emerging environmental business issues in order to develop high quality professional development programs.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Possess the ability to take individual initiative as well as possess superb collaboration skills to work with a team to implement successful learning programs.
  • Travel 5-8 times a year domestically, by plane.
  • Have the ability to frequently lift and carry conference materials and boxes weighing 10-20 pounds across conference venues for various events.
  • Have the ability to frequently reach above shoulder and head and stoop to set up conference space collateral. This can include kneeling under a table to obtain access to electrical outlets.
  • Be able to remain active and mobile for up to 10 hours a day while at conferences.

Position Description: NAEM Senior Educational Program Manager

This role is an integral part of our programs team and is focused on leading the development and implementation of content driven conferences for EHS industry leaders. This role reports to the Director of Programs.

Key activities:

Conference Content Creation & Execution:
The Senior Program Manager (SPM) is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the Association’s three national conferences which address a range of corporate environmental, health, safety and sustainability management issues. Specifically, this requires the candidate to:

  • Research and distill EHS and sustainability issues, programs, best practices and professional challenges into conference agendas that help attendees advance themselves and their programs
  • Convene and manage program development committees of corporate EHS and sustainability leaders
  • Create engaging event sessions and agendas that allow attendees to learn about issues and topics in a logical and comprehensive way
  • Possess a strong ability to identify and recruit volunteer speakers by persuading them of the value of participation in our conferences
  • Ensure the highest quality learning content is delivered at all conferences through proactive speaker management and coaching

This will include setting and ensuring all timeline deliverables are met, managing and meeting the event revenue and expense goals, and coordinating between different members of the NAEM staff, including the Marketing Manager, IT Manager and Communications Manager.  It will also require working with volunteer program advisors and senior program staff to incorporate their input into program development.

Strategic Planning: A successful candidate will assist with short and long-term strategic planning related to Association learning programs. This includes helping to develop, implement and track progress against the learning program objectives developed by the NAEM senior staff, the preparation of periodic operational review reports; and handling of periodic requests for information from supervisors and Board members.

Event Planning: The Senior Program manager will be responsible for managing all timelines, logistics, contracts and costs associated with each learning event. This will include working closely with a consultant that supports NAEM on event logistics, as well as hotel and corporate hosts to arrange logistical details for events, and managing hotel blocks, catering and transportation as necessary.

Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will:
