Elliot Levine
Environmental Engineer

Elliot Levine is an Environmental Engineer for Genentech Inc. In this capacity, he serves as program manager for the company's storm water pollution prevention; spill prevention, control and countermeasure (SPCC) plan; and refrigerant compliance management program.
Mr. Levine also is the leader of Genentech's 'Army of Darkness,' a 230-person volunteer group focused on reducing energy use across the company's campus. Additionally, he serves as a member of Genentech's solid waste working team, which is dedicated to reducing solid waste generation and increasing diversion from landfill by establishing recycling staging and studying the categories of materials in the company's waste stream.
Prior to joining Genentech, he also worked as a Research and Development Engineer for Becton, Dickinson and Co.; a Process Engineer for Malden Mills Industries Inc. and an Engineering Manager for Applied Biosystems.
Mr. Levine holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Tufts University.

What are currently working on?
I am responsible for the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program and I also work on several water conservation teams and projects. I am also involved in energy conservation efforts including leadership of a volunteer energy awareness team known as Army of Darkness.
What do you like about your job?
I like that anyone can significantly contribute to the success of the organization regardless of their role or prior experience. Both individuals and groups are recognized for their achievements and we also strive to learn from unsuccessful efforts.
What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
We have a large campus with many buildings and operations situated on San Francisco Bay. Raising awareness of the challenges associated with the work we do in the high bar environment of California with respect to regulatory compliance and sustainability is a continuous and evolving effort.
What career accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am always most happy when I am able to help someone with a challenge or to assist them in meeting their goals. It seems to me that people want to pay that forward and the ripple effect is very powerful and rewarding.
What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?
Listen, ask questions, read, study, volunteer for projects, talk with colleagues both inside and outside your organization, and always be respectful of others.
What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?
Climate change is the key to everything. How many natural and beautiful things on our planet are being degraded at alarming rates? If we don’t take the right steps and soon, some beauty may still be here, but we won’t be here to enjoy it.
What do you like to do during your free time?
I like to spend time outdoors, in the company of others, watching old movies, and reading. I also spend some free time with my favorite sports teams each season as well.
