"Smart Growth Could Spur, Economic Prosperity, Environmental Sustainability"

Sustainability is not just a business management paradigm for Patrick Doherty, Director of Smart Strategy at the New America Foundation: It's the strategic lens that should shape how we build our communities, structure our tax code and prioritize investments.

Speaking at NAEM's Corporate Sustainability Management Conference in Washington, DC today, Mr. Doherty explained that the United States needs a new 'grand strategy' to poise the country for long-term growth.

"The domestic economy and the global economy that we designed for the purposes of defeating the Soviets during the Cold War is no longer appropriate for the new global project," he said. "The trick is taking down the old Cold War system and putting up a new system that prioritizes that. Capital plus demand–an incredible opportunity for the United States."

At the heart of the new grand strategy Mr. Doherty envisions are significant investments in walkable, transit-friendly communities. Doing so, he said, would have the systemic benefits of fueling economic prosperity and mitigating resource depletion, while meeting the demands of a rapidly expanding global middle class.

NAEM Executive Director Carol Singer Neuvelt said thinking about sustainability in grand strategy terms could help member companies identify new opportunities for innovation.

"The economy of the future will be defined by resource scarcity," she said. "By creating new processes that will dramatically lower the resource intensity of products, companies will be able to gain a competitive advantage."

Celia Spence, who leads sustainability efforts for Westinghouse Electric, said the scope of the conversation helped her think about her role in a new way.

"It was really very gratifying to hear that there's a conversation happening about what we do that extends beyond what we talk about every day," she said. "Hearing that we can be part of a transformation that is absolutely essential to our societal well-being is very heartening."

Mr. Doherty's address was the first among a full day of presentations and conversations about how companies are managing their sustainability programs. The other speakers included:

Marjella Alma, Manager External Relations; GRI USA Focal Point
Marjella Alma is the Manager of External Relations for the Global Reporting Initiative’s Focal Point USA. She has been instrumental in developing and implementing sustainability reporting around the world by advising thousands of reporting organizations and conducting special GRI trainings, speaking engagements and workshops.

She joined GRI in early 2007 as a technical expert, contributing to GRI’s technical development team, where she set up the Report Services department. In developing the Report Services department she gained in-depth knowledge of GRI’s Reporting Framework implementation and application. Ms. Alma created GRI’s unique report assessment methodology “GRI Application Level Check”, and became an expert in external verification of sustainability data. For GRI’s Sustainability Disclosure Database she developed analytics and benchmarking of sustainability data. She also coordinated research regarding online reporting and the use of sustainability information by the investor community. She joined the U.S. team in January 2012.

Cynthia Cummis, Manager of GHG Protocol Product and Value Chain Initiative; World Resources Institute
Cynthia Cummis manages the World Resources Institute’s GHG Protocol’s Product and Value Chain Initiative. In this role she managed the development of the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and Product Life-Cycle Standards and now focuses on their wide adoption. She is a well-known expert in GHG accounting and brings more than 15 years of experience working on the issue of global climate change.

Prior to joining WRI, Ms. Cummis was the Director of Carbon Management at Clear Carbon Consulting, where she managed carbon quantification and management projects for multiple Fortune 500 clients as well as large public institutions. She was the founding Director of the U.S. EPA’s Climate Leaders Program, a voluntary program that partnered with businesses to develop corporate-wide greenhouse gas inventories and reduction goals. For more than five years, she led the design and implementation of the program and oversaw the growth of the program to more than 90 corporate Partners.

Ms. Cummis holds a MPA in environmental policy from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University.

Patrick Doherty, Director of the Smart Strategy Initiative; New America Foundation
Patrick Doherty is Deputy Director of the National Security Studies Program and Director of the Smart Strategy Initiative for the New America Foundation. The Smart Strategy Initiative seeks to provoke a new discourse across the United States and world capitals on the central challenge facing the United States, the nature and function of American grand strategy and the contours of a new grand strategy capable of forging a prosperous, secure and sustainable future for the United States. His writing has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post,,, The Washington Monthly, and The Chicago Tribune. He has appeared on CNN, ABC, BBC, NPR, Bloomberg, the Nightly Business Report and the Australian Broadcasting Service. Before joining New America in 2007, Mr. Doherty was Director of Communications at the Center for National Policy, a national security think tank with a focus on the U.S. Congress. Prior to that, he was a senior editor at, an online journal of politics and policy, where he was responsible for national security, macroeconomics, energy, and the environment. Before returning to Washington, Mr. Doherty spent ten years in the Middle East, Africa, the Balkans and the Caucuses working at the intersection of conflict and development. He served as Catholic Relief Services’ European Regional Advisor for Peacebuilding, as a consultant to the Organization of African Unity, and advised the Israeli and the Palestinian Authority’s education ministries. He also taught African politics at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Mr. Doherty holds a master’s degree in security studies from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, where he co-founded the Institute for Human Security, and a bachelor’s degree from the School of International Service at American University.

Katie Schmitz Eulitt, Associate Director, Stakeholder Engagement; Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)
Katie Schmitz Eulitt has been exploring and making the business case for sustainable development for more than 15 years. Her industry experience includes: finance; oil and gas; electric power; renewable energy; fine arts, and public relations. She has lived and worked in nine countries on four continents.

Ms. Eulitt earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Japanese at the University of California Berkeley, an MBA from Institut Européen d‘Administration des Affaires (INSEAD, France), and a certificate in Sustainable Management from the Presidio Graduate School. She is a board member of the Orange County Sustainability Collaborative.

Travis Kline, MEM, Senior Toxicologist; AlterEcho
Travis Kline oversees AlterEcho’s Toxicology and Risk Assessment practice, leading a team of human health and ecological risk assessors to deliver practical risk management strategies and solutions for clients.

He has served as an expert consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, providing senior oversight and negotiation support for investigation, remediation, land reuse and resource management projects nationwide. He was selected by the EPA to oversee the national external peer review of its Human Health Risk Assessment Protocol for Hazardous Waste Combustion Facilities (HHRAP), which serves as the agency’s de facto guide for risk assessment.

When he is not busy reading toxicology reports and protecting human health, he tries to keep pace with two active sons and a wife who has discovered triathlons. He is active with the National Ski Patrol as a regional examiner and ski racer, and tries to spend the rest of the year on his bike.

Maureen McGeehan, Marketing Manager; DuPont
Maureen McGeehan is a Marketing Manager in the DuPont Sustainable Growth Center with responsibility for assisting businesses with linking sustainability to their product offerings and value propositions. Prior to joining the Sustainable Growth Center two years ago, she held sales and marketing positions within a variety of DuPont businesses, including medical products, fibers and building products.

Ms. McGeehan has worked in a variety of roles for the DuPont, beginning with rotational assignments as part of the company’s six-year management training program. After completing the program, she assumed a sales position in DuPont Medical Products, followed by an assignment as Marketing Manager in the LYCRA® spandex business. She then moved into the DuPont Building Innovations business as a Residential Marketing Manager with responsibility for growing the Kitchen and Bath segment.

She is a former board member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association Board of Manufacturers and a former member of the Home Improvement Research Institute board. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Maribeth Malloy, Director of Environmental Sustainability & Employee Engagement; Lockheed Martin Corp.
Maribeth Malloy is Director for Environmental Sustainability and External Engagements for Lockheed Martin Corp., where she is responsible for developing the corporate strategy for environmental sustainability in coordination with the Corporate Sustainability Office and external communications regarding the company’s positions relative to these issues.

Ms. Malloy began her career with IBM, assuming responsibility for the chemical management program and Environmental Impact Assessments at a major semi-conductor facility. During the business transitions of the 1990s when the IBM business was sold to Lockheed Martin, Ms. Malloy progressed with responsibility for the corporate ESH audit program and corporate governance. After leading the ESH and Medical functions in the Aeronautics line of business, Malloy returned to a corporate position with the focus on sustainability.

Mark Serwinowski, President and Founder; MetaVu Inc.
Mark A. Serwinowski is President and Founder of MetaVu Inc., a recognized thought leader in sustainable development strategy and performance measurement. For 23 years, he has practiced in the EHS and Sustainability space, helping global 1000 companies realize the economic benefits of managing energy, environmental and social performance from a business perspective. He has held management and equity positions at leading product and service companies in the environmental engineering, EHS and sustainability management sectors.

As chief strategy officer for MetaVu, Mr. Serwinowski helps simplify the complexity of investing in sustainability and empowers executives to choose investment strategies best for their business. His award-winning work has helped structure, benchmark and inform innovation of numerous company business models and products in the marketplace.

He is co-host of the quarterly “Changing ESG Landscape” webcast and a contributor to the University of Denver’s CSR & Sustainability platform at the Institute for Enterprise Ethics. He is an Advisory Council member of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), a member of the NAEM Affiliates Council, and an instructor at the University of Denver’s Executive MBA program.

Mark Stephan, Principal Program Manager, Office of Sustainability; EMC Corp.
Mark Stephan is a Principle Program Manager for EMC Corp.’s Office of Sustainability. In addition to his work on enterprise sustainability management tools, such as materiality assessments and sustainability dashboards, he manages external nongovernmental organization stakeholder engagement and has been continuing a tradition of deepening stakeholder relationships. He is interested in integrated sustainability management systems and the lifecycle of engagement, continually exploring how stakeholders and business leaders can work together to define sustainability goals and prioritize initiatives.

Mr. Stephan previously worked in EMC in environmental compliance, and thrives at the intersection of information technology, business, and sustainability.

He has a degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan, an MBA from Boston University, and has attended Environmental Management and Sustainability classes from Harvard University.

James Voyles, Director of Environmental Affairs; The Mosaic Co.
James Voyles is the Director of Environmental Affairs for The Mosaic Co., the world’s leading producer and marketer of concentrated phosphate and potash, two of the primary crop nutrients required to grow the food the world needs.

He has spent more than 20 years managing, leading, litigating, advocating and counseling major companies on critical environmental, health, and safety issues. In his current role, he heads a of team of environmental experts who address the full range of environmental issues facing Mosaic – air, water, waste, and emerging regulations. His team develops cost-effective permitting and compliance strategies; provides leadership for state and federal advocacy on critical environmental issues, including participating in state and federal rulemaking; and manages complex environmental enforcement and permitting issues.

Prior to becoming Director of Environmental Affairs, Mr. Voyles was Senior Environmental and Corporate Counsel with Mosaic. He previously held similar positions at Cargill, Koch Industries, and Mobil Oil. He has defended many large enforcement cases and has provided compliance counseling in all areas of environmental law, including mining, air, water, waste, release reporting, remediation, fuels, and other related federal and state statutes and regulations.

Mr. Voyles received a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Brigham Young University and a JD, cum laude, from Cornell Law School. He is the author of Managing Your Hazardous Wastes – A Step-by-Step Guide, 2nd Edition, Government Institutes (now ABS), 2002.

Jennifer Verrine, Director, Retail EHS; The Estee Lauder Co.’s
Jennifer Verrine is the Director of Global EHS programs at The Estee Lauder Companies, specializing in retail. Her team supports more than 800 retail stores and supporting business units for 25 brands in more than 150 countries. She brings 20 years of experience to her role, including her previous positions as a Health and Safety consultant with Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. and an Industrial Hygienist at Cornell University.

She holds an MPH in Environmental Science from New York Medical College.

Dr. Allen White, Vice President and Senior Fellow; Tellus Institute
Dr. Allen White is Vice President and Senior Fellow at Tellus Institute in Boston, where he directs the institute’s Program on Corporate Redesign. In 1997, he co-founded the Global Reporting Initiative ( and served as its Acting CEO until 2002. In 2004, he co-founded and is now Director of Corporation 2020 (, an initiative focused on designing future corporations to create and sustain social mission.

For his expertise in sustainability strategy, policy, tools and standards, he has been engaged by a number of influential agencies, nongovernmental organizations, foundations and companies including: the World Bank the Pew Charitable Trusts, the UN Foundation, Fortune 500 companies, The United States Environmental Protection Agency, Oxfam and People4Earth.

Dr. White has held faculty and research positions at the University of Connecticut, Clark University and Battelle Laboratories, and is a former Fulbright Scholar in Peru. He was Founding Chair of GAN-Net/iScale and has served on boards, advisory groups and committees of the International Corporate Governance Network, Civic Capital, Instituto Ethos (Brazil), the New Economy Network, New Earth/Earthster, and the Initiative for Responsible Investment at the JFK School, Harvard University.

Since 2005, Dr. White has served as Senior Advisor to Business for Social Responsibility and to CERES as a principal architect of the first standardized environmental reporting framework in the years following launch of the organization in 1990. He is co-author of Corporate Environmentalism in a Global Economy and has published and spoken widely on corporate design, sustainability, accountability and governance.

Bob Willard, Corporate Sustainability Author; Sustainability Advantage
Bob Willard is a leading expert on quantifying and selling the business value of corporate sustainability strategies. Drawing insights from his 34-year career at IBM Canada, he advises business community on how to avoid risks and capture opportunities by using smart environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies.

He is author of four books --The Sustainability Advantage (2002), The Next Sustainability Wave (2005), The Sustainability Champion’s Guidebook (2009), The New Sustainability Advantage (2012) — and the creator of numerous capacity-building resources and DVDs for sustainability leaders.

In addition to serving on the advisory board of The Natural Step Canada and Forum for the Future US, Mr. Willard is on ad hoc advisory committees for sustainable business certificate programs at Seneca College, Algonquin College, and Ryerson University. He is also on the core faculty of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) and is a citizen member of the Durham Region Roundtable on Climate Change (DRRCC). He hopes to help develop a Gold Standard for truly sustainable enterprises through his work with the Global Initiative for Sustainability Ratings (GISR) Technical Advisory Committee and with the B Lab Large Company Sustainability Working Group.

In 2011, he was inducted into the International Society of Sustainability Professionals’ Hall of Fame. He was one of the first Certified B Corps in Canada, and in 2012 was honored to be named to B Corp’s “Best for the World” Overall Impact list of the top 10 percent of worldwide B Corps with fewer than 10 employees.

He has a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University (1964), and a Master of Education (2000) and PhD (2005) from the University of Toronto.
