Award Category: Advancing Corporate Transparency
Alex Chapman, Director of Regulatory Affairs for Stericycle, now part of WM, was nominated for the NAEM Excellence Awards’ Leadership in Action – Advancing Corporate Transparency category in recognition of her nearly two decades of leadership at the intersection of healthcare regulatory compliance, waste management, and sustainability. Chapman has worked to transform healthcare waste management from a traditional disposal function into a strategic tool for improving environmental performance, reducing costs, enhancing worker safety, and strengthening operational resilience.
Her accomplishments include developing educational programs such as Waste Wizard Wednesdays; strengthening collaboration with Practice Greenhealth to advance compliant and sustainable healthcare waste programs; creating an industry waste-reporting framework aligned with The Joint Commission’s Sustainable Healthcare Certification that was used in a mock certification survey and national recertification efforts; supporting community pharmaceutical disposal initiatives with BronxCare Health System; and leading a national, cross-functional manifest taskforce affecting tens of thousands of hazardous-material shipping documents annually.
Through industry partnerships, training, thought leadership, and data-driven frameworks, Chapman has helped healthcare organizations improve waste segregation, integrate compliance with sustainability objectives, and view waste management as a meaningful opportunity to reduce their environmental footprint while delivering measurable operational and business value.
