Award Category: Keeping Employees Safe
Kyle Vogel, Director of EHS for Comcast’s Mountain West Region, was nominated for the NAEM Excellence Awards’ Leadership in Action – Keeping Employees Safe category in recognition of his more than 12 years of EHS leadership and his role in developing and scaling Comcast’s enterprise-wide Safety Helmet Initiative. Recognizing the need for enhanced head protection for employees working at heights and in dynamic field environments, Vogel led the transition from traditional hard hats to modern safety helmets for Technical Operations and Network Maintenance employees, guiding the initiative from regional pilot through national implementation. He coordinated extensive employee trials, stakeholder feedback, supplier engagement, business-case development, procurement, training, communications, and executive alignment while bringing together EHS, Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, Procurement, Communications, manufacturers, and frontline employees. The program ultimately resulted in the deployment of more than 21,000 safety helmets across Comcast, with workers’ compensation data from the Mountain West pilot showing zero head-injury-related losses across the operating areas analyzed following implementation. The helmets also provided enhanced protection through secure retention, high-visibility designs, and integrated accessories, with their effectiveness demonstrated shortly after rollout when a helmet remained in place during a technician’s ladder fall and helped prevent a potentially more severe injury.
Through data-driven decision-making, employee engagement, disciplined project management, and collaborative change leadership, Vogel transformed a regional safety improvement into a sustainable enterprise program that reduced head-injury risk, strengthened preventive safety practices, standardized protection across field operations, and reinforced Comcast’s commitment to employee safety.
