A Letter from NAEM’s Executive Director
It is with gratitude, pride, and bittersweetness that I share the news of my retirement as Executive Director of NAEM, effective at the end of this year. While this decision was not easy, I know the time is right for NAEM to transition to new leadership. Serving this organization—and each of you—has been the most rewarding experience of my professional life.
When I first stepped into this role three decades ago, I could only imagine the incredible journey ahead. What began as a small group of environmental managers in the Boston area has evolved into a robust professional association of Environmental, Health & Safety, and Sustainability (EHS&S) leaders across North America and beyond.
From the beginning I’ve been dedicated to helping individuals grow professionally, cultivating business leaders, and creating a culture of collaborative problem-solving. Together, we have built a safe haven for knowledge exchange and a trusted community of practice.
I’ve remained in awe of the work done by EHS&S professionals throughout the course of my tenure and am deeply honored to have contributed to this field. To serve this community, we pioneered a peer-based conference approach to provide access to high-value actionable learning outcomes; developed the first-ever mid-career sustainability leadership program with Carnegie Mellon University; published essential research like Green Metrics that Matter and the industry-standard EHS&S Staffing, Structure and Budget report; and ushered in an awards program to showcase and recognize the impact of EHS&S leaders.
Most importantly, we built a professional home where smart, talented, and growth-oriented leaders can network, benchmark, and learn.
It has been my absolute pleasure to support you, develop programs you value, and introduce new ideas to help you advance your personal & professional objectives. My motivation was always that time spent with NAEM left you feeling more enriched, inspired, and connected. Thank you for your participation and commitment – none of our success would have been possible without you.
My greatest honor has been working alongside the NAEM Boards, Affiliates, volunteers, and especially our dedicated staff. Their collective commitment to NAEM’s mission ensures that this association will continue to thrive in the years ahead.
As you know, change is both inevitable and challenging. A transition plan is already underway to ensure the continuity of our leadership and programs, and the Board of Directors is actively engaged in this process. My priority between now and my departure is to support a smooth, comprehensive handoff so our shared momentum carries forward without interruption.
I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me and for the meaningful relationships I have made along the way. I look forward to watching NAEM continue to grow, and to cheering you all on from the next chapter of my journey.
