Cargill’s Rudolfo von Borstel Receives NAEM’s NexGen Leaders Award

NAEM NexGen Leader Award - Rudolfo von Borstel
TORONTO, Ont., Oct. 16, 2019 — Today, the National Association for Environmental, Health Safety and Sustainability (EHS&S) Management (NAEM) presented a NexGen Leaders Award to Rudolfo von Borstel, Regional Environmental Director for Latin America, Cargill.

Mr. von Borstel was one of eight corporate EHS&S leaders recognized at NAEM’s Excellence Awards ceremony which took place during the largest annual gathering for environment, health, and safety, and sustainability decision-makers — NAEM’s 27th annual EHS&S Management Forum.

“Since joining Cargill [in 2006], Rudolfo has helped build the company’s environmental capacity in an extraordinary way,” stated nominator and manager, Anne Monine, EHS AVP - Environment, Cargill. Mr. von Borstel’s leadership in the Latin American region extends across all Cargill businesses (food, agricultural, animal nutrition, and bio-industrial), covering 300 locations in 17 countries with 35,000 employees.

Among numerous accomplishments deserving of NAEM’s NexGen Leaders Award, Mr. von Borstel resourced and managed the implementation of the EHS regulatory tracking tool that assesses and monitors compliance with legal requirements — today environmental compliance is at 85%. The number of environmental events documented increased by 250% after the deployment of an environmental management program and basic requirements under Mr. von Borstel’s leadership. He also is responsible for the creation and development of the EHS&S Compliance Control Tower Area — a new means to dramatically increase EHS&S compliance by promoting higher visibility of risk assessment, resources, and priorities—deployed across the Agricultural Supply Chain business in the region.

In addition to his technical skill, Ms. Monine cited Mr. von Borstel’s strong relationship-building skills. “Rudolfo is a master at working with others,” she wrote in her nomination. “He understands how to balance business-specific needs with corporate needs; growth plans with compliance positions; and Cargill’s needs with external stakeholder needs. Rudolfo simply brings out the best in others.”
